Cons

  • Rental rates continue to rise as the area.
The Little Italy neighborhood of Chicago is sandwiched between the Lower West Side and the Near West Side. Also known as University Village, due to its proximity to the University of Illinois at Chicago, the major highways running through Little Italy are 290 (running east to west) and 90/94 (running north to south). The name Little Italy comes from the influx of Italian immigrants, mostly from Sicily, that flocked to the area in the 1850s. The number of Italians increased through the years, setting up businesses, and soon the area was known for its Italian cultural heritage.

Today Little Italy is populated mostly by university students. The University of Illinois at Chicago is one of the largest Universities in Chicago with around 25,000 students, and many of these students live in Little Italy. A Little Italy apartment, then, would be especially convenient for both students and professors of the University.

Little Italy is also known for its excellent cuisine. The proximity of Little Italy apartments to the neighborhood's nationally renowned restaurants is a benefit that most residents take for granted. Taylor Street is populated with amazing Italian restaurants, including Pompeii, Tuscany, and Francesca's.

There are numerous important landmarks within Little Italy that tourists and residents can all enjoy. Our Lady of Pompeii and Holy Guardian Angel are two Catholic Churches situated within Little Italy that are not to be missed -- even for non-Catholics. The Hull House Settlement Buildings is a national Historic Landmark, and now contains the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. It was at the Hull House that issues of social justice, immigrant and women's rights, juvenile justice and urban development were discussed and acted upon. Lastly, the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame is a Little Italy nonprofit that honors athletes of Italian descent. A Little Italy apartment would be close to the rich cultural heritage of this old Italian neighborhood.
